Design

The following are examples of my design work. These are pieces I either designed myself or directed as the lead of a creative team. There have been hundreds of pieces over the past 15 years, from ads to catalogs to websites to packaging. Unfortunately, I no longer have copies of everything I’ve designed, but here is a representative sample:

Dexterity Brand Packaging (2010)
Medical Exam Glove Brand Development and Package Design
SmartPractice, Inc.

Working with the SmartPractice team, we developed the Dexterity brand as a value brand of medical examination gloves, positioned below two other glove brands in price and quality. The core design work involved naming, logo design and packaging design. A color system was developed to signal the products — Latex, Nitrile and PVC. The products are, as of summer 2010, in the process of being launched to the market.

QualiTouch Brand Packaging (2010)
Medical Exam Glove Rebranding and Package Design
SmartPractice, Inc.

Working with the SmartPractice team, we rebranded the existing QualiTouch medical exam glove brand. QualiTouch is SmartPractice’s premium glove brand, so we aimed for a more sophisticated contemporary graphic style. The core design work involved logo design and packaging design. A color system was also developed to distinguish all the varieties of the glove. The newly branded products are, as of summer 2010, in the process of being launched to the market.

Chocolá Archaeological Project Website (2006)
Website Design and Content Editing
Chocolá Archaeological Project

One of my many side interests is archaeology, and over the years I have volunteered on a few expeditions. The whole physical and intellectual process of going out into the field and uncovering data about past cultures is amazing to me. Plus, you get to see places and meet people you’d never meet at a tourist resort. I designed and helped edit the Chocolá Archaeological Project website for the director of the project. The project involved a Maya site in Guatemala. The web site’s still live. Click here to visit.

Discover the Dream (2003)
Product Packaging and Collateral Design
International Cruises and Excursions, Inc.

Working with my team at International Cruises and Excursions (ICE), we developed this vacation sampler product, named “Discover the Dream.” The product involved vacation vouchers used by resorts to market vacation ownership (timeshare). It came in a casebound portfolio and included a DVD and various brochures and vouchers. The design of the product emphasized premium value through the casebound portfolio and the joy of vacationing through color, imagery and copy.

Corporate Collateral (2002-2003)
Printed Collateral Design
International Cruises and Excursions, Inc.

At International Cruises and Excursions (ICE), we designed and distributed an annual “corporate profile” as a corporate collateral piece in order to attract B2B customers and partners. The above examples are from 2002 and 2003. The design was intended to signal professionalism and an “upscale” image. In retrospect, I cringe at the stock photography, but it was what it was. You can view these up close in pdf form by clicking: ICE Corporate Profile 2002 or ICE Corporate Profile 2003.

Guild Guitars (1997-2000)
Printed Advertising
Guild Guitars / Fender Musical Instruments Corporation

At Fender, I did quite a lot of work on the Guild brand, including a magalog called Guild Gallery and many print ads. The two ads above, featuring Steve Marker of Garbage and Richie Havens, are examples. I worked closely at Fender with Rich Siegle, who was Director of Advertising at that time. Rich was one of my true design mentors. Thanks, Bugsy!
